Professor Philip Winn

Chair of Medical Research Scotland

I am Research Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Strathclyde, in the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences, and I’m an Honorary Professor of Psychology at the University of St Andrews.

I became Chairman in 2014, taking over from Professor David Harrison. I was greatly attracted to Medical Research Scotland’s work, helping to develop and sustain careers through its award programmes and outreach, and supporting collaboration between Universities and industry. It’s a strategy that meets the needs of the nation – developing the life sciences in a knowledge economy – but achieves this grand design by focusing on people – individuals – helping scientists in the early stages of their careers. The way Medical Research Scotland works in education and research, supporting its students and facing out into the world, is very powerful and reflects well how I have tried to progress my own career in University teaching and research.
