Professor Matthew Walters

Trustee

I have served as Head of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing at the University of Glasgow since 2016. My clinical interest is in cerebrovascular medicine and I work as an honorary consultant physician in the regional hyperacute stroke unit of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow. Between 2016 and 2019 I directed the Scottish Stroke Research Network and I held the role of lead physician for cerebrovascular medicine in West Glasgow between 2004 and 2015. My research interests lie in the treatment of acute cerebrovascular disease. I have a significant interest in early career development for postgraduate trainees and have served as national training programme director for my clinical specialty. I also edit the UK’s leading textbook of Clinical Pharmacology.

In 2020 I was awarded an MBE for services to the NHS during the COVID pandemic.

I joined the board of Trustees of Medical Research Scotland in 2022 and hope to use my experience in clinical medicine and patient-centred research to the benefit of the charity.
