Investigation of the protein link associated with Alzheimer’s disease and type 2 diabetes University of Aberdeen Past award Student: Philip Hoffman : University of Aberdeen Year Award Started: 2018 Incidences of diabetes, caused by obesity and known as type 2, have risen of recent years. Current research suggests a close relationship between type 2 diabetes and increased risk of development of Alzheimer’s disease. This condition is also sometimes referred to as type 3 diabetes (T3D). A proposed mechanism that underlines occurrence of T3D suggests elevated levels of the protein amyloid β, normally associated with Alzheimer’s accumulates because of reduced levels of insulin during diabetes. This research aims to use mouse models to further expand our understanding of the interplay of diabetes related protein accumulation in the brain.
