Medical Research Scotland Academy 2026

The Medical Research Scotland Academy is an interactive online learning series for S4, S5 and S6 pupils.

The event aims to inspire pupils who are considering pursuing STEM subjects in their future education and career. The virtual series is an opportunity to hear from medical researchers, scientists, and industry leaders to learn more about their medical breakthroughs and personal career journeys. Across the series, a variety of fields are delved into such as pharmacology, imaging, nutrition, cancer research and many more.

Week 1 – Friday 6 March 2026

For week one you will hear from Professor Joanna Wilson, School of Molecular Biosciences, University of Glasgow sharing her academic journey and Dr Sam Holt, Lab Manager at University of Glasgow to explore molecular research in a shared lab facility.

Week 2 – Friday 13 March 2026

For week two, as part of our “What is ?” series, you will hear from Professor Steve Tucker, Chair in Pharmacology Education and Programme Lead for the Pharmacology Programmes at University of Aberdeen, explaining “What is Pharmacology?”. .

The second part of the episode features Dr Gonzalo Cebrero, Senior Cryo-EM Support Scientist and Dr Giusy Briola, Cryo-EM Support Scientist, both from the University of Glasgow. They will be sharing their research on Cryo-EM, an imaging technique which they use to take extremely detailed pictures of biological samples, such as cells or viruses. Drs Cebrero and Briola will share how this technique has been used in research and what it has helped to achieve.

Week 3 – Friday 20 March 2026

For week three you will hear from Professor Martin Denvir, Professor of Medical Cardiology and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the University of Edinburgh exploring the heart in health and disease. In the second part of the session, Ali Muqtadir, a Medical Research Scotland-funded PhD Student at the University of Stirling, will discuss what football heading does to the brain.
