Dr Alun Hughes

Trustee

I am a senior lecturer in Physiology and Pharmacology in the School of Medicine (PhD), and the Associate Dean (Curriculum) for Science & Medicine at the University of St Andrews. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. My current research interests are in education research, focussing on utilisation of technology enhanced learning and management of risks in healthcare education. My previous research interests have included cancer therapeutics and prevention, treatments for metabolic bone disorders, and novel regulatory pathways in osteogenesis. My teaching covers integrated physiology and pharmacology teaching across several medical programmes at the University of St Andrews, as well as contributing to postgraduate teaching for health professions education.

I was appointed as a Trustee to Medical Research Scotland in 2025. As a passionate educationalist, I was excited to become part of the Medical Research Scotland team due to their keen focus on ensuring students receive a high-quality educational experience as part of their PhD. The focus on ensuring clear training outcomes for students that prepare them for their future careers, enhanced by their engagement and support with external partner organisations, makes MRS a highly exciting scheme to be part of.

It is a privilege to apply my educational expertise and experience to help MRS inspire applications that centre the researcher’s growth and development at the heart of all projects, which I hope will ensure projects are both scientifically excellent but also generate excellent, well-rounded and resilient researchers of the future.
